Bury those power lines!

By Guest - Posted on 22 December 2006

Every time the wind blows over 50 km the power goes out. Trees topple and take out entire sections of the grid. So why do we keep hanging power lines on sticks?

We run fibre optics and cable underground alongside waterlines and gas pipes. Can't somebody figure out a way to string a length of wire underground as well?

We could work it into the annual digging-up of 56 Street.

Why so many?

Another acronym to write down on your notepad. Here is a message from one of the founders.......

IT IS NOT TOO LATE – BUT THE TIME IS NOW
Stop Transmission Overhead Powerlines – (STOP)
January 4, 2007

A group of concerned citizens, none of which are underneath the BC Hydro power line right of way in Tsawwassen, have formed an organization called Stop Transmission Overhead Powerlines or STOP. STOP’s Executive is currently comprised of Dana Carroll, Michael Anderson, Patrick Conroy and Bob Bracken. It is the intention of STOP to add executive members in the area of public schools governance, civic governance, health, legal, finance and public relations. Can you help?

This is a positive, community-enhancing initiative. You are a community stakeholder.
So STOP asks that you support and participate as a formal sponsor in cash or in kind at the following levels:
Platinum
$5,000
Gold
$2,500
Silver
$1,000
Bronze
$ 500
Tickets for Sat Feb 10, 2007 Gala $200 per person or $300 per couple at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn

Background. STOP has reviewed the submissions and evidence of various citizens’ organizations on the power lines issue and has found grievous flaws in process and procedure. Apart from the premise that industrial strength electromagnetic transmission over houses and schools is just wrong, evidence has been ignored, big business has been favoured and viable, less costly alternatives have been overlooked. Health, life and safety risks are being ignored or discounted. Other communities have successfully pressured government for alternatives, but the new BC Transmission Corporation and BC Utilities Commissions have since been formed to make it far more difficult for citizens’ rights to be recognized.

The Precedent. All communities in the province will be negatively affected if Tsawwassen is allowed to be the “precedent for high voltage line placement within a residential community. The livability of Tsawwassen will be lessened and all property values in the community are likely to suffer.

The Plan. STOP has agreed to galvanize support from the province of British Columbia, the corporate community and local residences in convincing the provincial government that new transmission lines can and must be placed along other viable non-residential corridors by:
· Immediately undertaking a communications strategy to inform stakeholders and explain the negative precedent affecting all communities in B.C.. (Starting January 5th and ending Friday February 9th a simple but strong message will be advertised in the Leader and Optimist. Your logo needs to be beside that message.)
· Obtaining letters of support from Stakeholders over the next four weeks
· Making a direct presentation to Premier Campbell in January 2007 outlining the flaws of process and presenting viable alternatives and letters of support from stakeholders (Could we have your letter by January 15th?)
· Maintain support for the sole legal defence against the new transmission line
· Lobby for government repayment of all private expenditure fighting the power lines issue
· Solicit corporate and private funding for communications, legal and travel expenses
· Hold a Fund Raising Gala Saturday Feb 10, 2007 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn which will include dinner, entertainment, featured speaker and silent and live auction. Could you support this by attending or donating prizes?
· Gala Tickets will be $200.00 per person or $300.00 for couples

During all communications and fundraising, sponsors of STOP will be recognized if they so choose. All advertising will be provided to sponsors in advance. Sponsors may elect to not appear on certain advertisements. Please contact us by telephone or email as follows:

Good comment. You are right. I think 56 has been dug up three times in the last ten years. Why not let have 1st ave have a turn?

Run Hydro up first to the Bluff and then send it to the island.

BTW what a loser I am to be posting on Christmas eve!
