You will no doubt be noticing the weekly additions to your local retailers as our seasonal bounty starts to make it off the farm and out of the sea and on the path to our welcoming dinner tables.
BC’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food have done well to continue with its important ‘Buy BC’ messaging and why wouldn’t we buy it? We produce some of the most sought after food products in the world.
Seasonal delicacies like Warba spuds and Sockeyes Salmon, Spot Prawns and early greens are typical pairings to be enjoyed as we step boldly in to summer.
Meal choices often become a little different with the heat of the season. They are usually a little lighter, perhaps simpler, but most certainly fresher.
Organizations like BC Fresh are in warp drive right now, ensuring that our world renowned fruit and vegetable products are making it to a store near you.
In addition to larger retailers and grocery stores, Delta is lucky to have some smaller niche businesses that can offer local delicacies that aren’t often seen in larger commercial operations.
A couple of examples of places where you will find unique local products are Joe’s Farm Market in Tsawwassen and Backroads Farm Market in Ladner.
In consulting my seasonal fave chart, I am noticing that nectarines and peaches are up next on my gastronomic radar. You may recall that last year was a complete write off on these stone fruit due to a polar worthy winter.
I am happy to report that the sector has made a come back this year and though they probably won’t be as readily available as they have been in the past, they are back! You better get to the stores before I do!
Although it’s only July, I can hardly wait until September.
