The "Ultimate Solution"...Nimby Style!

By Mike - Posted on 07 July 2006

We need a Larry Beasley! The retiring Vancouver planning official is leaving behind the enviable legacy of Vancouver....the walkable, livable and playable city.

These "Smart Growth" attributes are easy to apply in a city that has approved appropriate zoning in appropriate places. Mayor Sam Sullivan is still planning to fit another 70,000 lucky souls in to the borders of this now world renowned model of Urban sustainability.

For the Municipality Delta and especially South Delta, the prospect of "densification" is painted as the ultimate evil. Can Delta hire Mr. Beasley as a consultant...and quick before we flood or all the Orcas die?

The prospect of adding development in this region to accommodate some of the hundreds of thousands of people that want to live in "suburbia" in the Greater Vancouver regional district is causing many individuals in and around our community to go as far as to suggest that we need need to "restrict immigration" to curb a growth rate that is "unsustainable".

The "Ultimate Solution".....NIMBY style.

This blind idealism will not contribute to any reasonable discussion of how to best evolve as a region.

Is our Larry the mayor?..the GVRD? I don't get the sense that we have anyone really working on this. It's like once you complete the "Official Comminity Plan" you are out of the frying pan.

The OCP has always been described as a "living document" but we all know that is a lovely platitude designed to keep the the political players online for the next go 'round.

Can we ever get out of our small town rutt?

I don't want skyscrapers and all that crap but I do want to be able to take a freakin' bus when I want to!

I would also like to be able to have some more space open up for infrastructure....libraries, playing fields, ice rinks.

Why do we continulally get shafted in the South?

I would like to see the Municipality post numbers on play time for kids in usable facilities. This should include everything from gymnastics to hockey. I am willing to bet that there are huge discrepencies between the North and the South,

Show me the numbers!

An interesting article on .....NEW URBANISM

It was nice to see some coverage on our issue ridden domain from Vaughn Palmer in the < a href="http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/columnists/story.html?id=ea975c38-a2f7-415b-b829-50b7d89a14df">VANCOUVER SUN.

Withy no shortage of pressing dilemma's, our little town will be front and centre for a while.

How can we possibly want development here when there are some many ecosytems at stake?

Why can't we just leave things as they are?
