The upcoming Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion fundraiser involves biking, skating and even non-rolling types of transportation like walking and running, but it isn't a competition, says organizer Mary Ann McDaniel.
"It's all about participation, it's not a race," she says.
The fundraiser is set for Sunday, June 12 in Tsawwassen.
Half the proceeds stay in the community for a yet-to-be determined cause, while the rest is sent to the Rick Hansen Man In Motion Foundation for spinal cord research and improving the quality of life for those with spinal cord injuries.
This will be the third year for the event. In its inaugural year, $1,800 was taken in. That amount was dwarfed last year when over $15,400 was raised.
New automatic doors at Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre were installed using money from Wheels in Motion last year.
The event, which begins and finishes at the Scotiabank on 56th Street, gets started with a $5 pancake breakfast around 8:30 a.m. Registration takes place at 9 a.m. and participants depart on their choice of a three-kilometre or eight-kilometre route at 10 a.m.
The full route goes all the way to Centennial Beach.
You can register at the event or online at www.wheelsinmotion.org. The website also has more information about Wheels in Motion.
If you know of a person, program or group proceeds from this year's Wheels in Motion could benefit, contact McDaniel at 604-948-1231.
