The "Ultimate Solution"...Nimby Style!

By BYCOOP admin - Posted on 07 July 2006

We need a Larry Beasley! The retiring Vancouver planning official is leaving behind the enviable legacy of Vancouver....the walkable, livable and playable city.

These "Smart Growth" attributes are easy to apply in a city that has approved appropriate zoning in appropriate places. Mayor Sam Sullivan is still planning to fit another 70,000 lucky souls in to the borders of this now world renowned model of Urban sustainability.

For the Municipality Delta and especially South Delta, the prospect of "densification" is painted as the ultimate evil. Can Delta hire Mr. Beasley as a consultant...and quick before flood or all the Orcas die?

The prospect of adding development in this region to accommodate some of the hundreds of thousands of people that want to live in "suburbia" in the Greater Vancouver regional district is causing many individuals in and around our community to go as far as to suggest that we need need to "restrict immigration" to curb a growth rate that is "unsustainable".

The "Ultimate Solution".....NIMBY style.

This blind idealism will not contribute to any reasonable discussion of how to best evolve as a region.

there is a very interesting and informative continuing dialogue that is ongoing on the livable communities listserve, which is part of Smartgrowth BC. to view it or participate in it, try this link: http://lists.smartgrowth.bc.ca/read/?forum=livable-communities&max=100&s... Adam Fitch
