New Poll addressing Transportation Issues. What is your Concern?
We have a new poll that addresses some of our local and regional transportation challenges. Take a second to choose an option. It's just on the left sidebar of this page. It's been quite a week for "Gateway Speak". That can only be a good thing as it very difficult for the average citizen, commuter or goods mover, to weigh the costs and benefits of the massive undertaking. In Tuesday's Vancouver Sun there was an excellent piece form VAUGN PALMER regarding the Premiers' comments on the project and a great story on the effect of LAND VALUES written by Derrick Penner. But wait, that's not all! The BILL GOOD SHOW< /a> featured an excellent discussion on the issues relating to housing and movement of goods and traffic. There are so many peripheral elements to the issue that make it even more daunting especially for us poor folk who live in South Delta. Many regions will be affected by the Gateway Project and I don't want to suggest that we need special care and attention....I am just saying that our local traffic situation is compounded by close proximity to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal and to DeltaPort. To complicate things even more so, our population does not enjoy the frequency of transit service common to other municipalities due to our low population and marginal growth rate. As a result we commute in SOV's and drive to adjoining municipalities (in SOV's) to buy stuff that is not available in our local market. We've got more green space per capita than other municipalities which is nice but not really a factor in contributing to our collective long term health as a community. Our Official Community Plan shows lots of "environmentally sensitive" areas and lots of ALR land but offers us little in the way of creative zoning that could increase our local density and afford us the opportunity to realize the benefits of more dynamic cores and mixed use housing types. For those of you living outside of South Delta we certainly welcome your input because chances are you have driven to the Ferry terminal or through the Massey Tunnel and would have some sort of appreciation for our concerns. By the way, have you ever driven in to our town centre on the way to the ferry? If so, why?
