Letters and comment in the September 9 Delta Optimist

By Mike - Posted on 09 September 2009

It was beat up on the Southlands day today in the Delta Optimist The usual stuff...loss of farmland....have to be able to feed ourselves - you know the routine.

If that wasn't enough there was a classic piece of literature mailed to my front stoop. As usual the propaganda fails to offer any solution and/or alternative to the development proposals for the Southlands except to say no and to keep the lands as farmlands.

I am sure that Century Group will have an exit strategy if their proposals are not accepted. Have the Save the Southlands folks thought that far ahead or are they just assuming that the land will stay as is. If that is the case they are probably more naive than I thought they were.

Can someone at www.savethesouthlands.ca tell me what they would do with the land if it was sold to them after being put back in to the ALR? What large multinational or regional farmer would jump in and what would they grow to be profitable? Grapes?....too much salinization. Hog farm? Maybe not bad return here. Green houses? A viable solution for sure.

Would a local farmer pretend he could compete and sell his crop to Woodwards as is suggested in the 1968 remembrance illustration in the propaganda? I am sure we can all come up with antique snapshots of rural pasts in every region of Metro Vancouver or elsewhere. Is this supposed to be news of some sort?

Those days are gone I am afraid. New ways of farming are taking root all the world. Failure to recognize potential here does not encourage me to think that the people who oppose the development are ready to compromise from their no position. What else is new?

Did you notice that the mailout that was sent around a while back spelled Tsawwassen wrong? Not once but twice! Lacking attention to detail is a hallmark of the NO camp.

Ted Laturnus chimes in on the Southlands in typically naive fashion. If Laturnus wants to spit venom he should at least try to understand the issues before the grand pontification.

His response to the recent letter from Roger McPherson in the Delta Optimist is illustrative of a group of people that are quickly positioning themselves as fringe rebels glomming on to old ideals. These people are too tired or lazy to pick up a book and figure out what is really going on in the world.

When I read this stuff that has absolutely no substance in it, I just cringe. I am happy that there are some people out there that generally want to discuss the issue rather than continually just say no like the ever boring Laturnus.
