Jackson Hamilton and Campbell Leave Tri-Delta

By Mike - Posted on 22 September 2008

Not that you couldn't see this coming!

Here is my comment from the September 19 Delta Optimist......

"I like a good laugh as much as the next guy. The comedic posturing by some Tri-Delta founders and members only serves to portray the group as self absorbed zealots who fail to understand that Delta does not live in a time warp and that is somehow immune to the pressures of a growing region.

These same people would prefer to build an artificial barrier in Delta (South Delta in particular) and simply say no to anything that remotely resembles a shift from some sort of 50’s style status quo.

Believe it or not, residents of North Delta have issues in their community that do not mirror those of the South. People in the South are overly vocal on perceived assaults on quality of life (whatever that means), and lefty motherhood protectionist ideas surrounding ALR land. People in the North?....they are concerned with housing issues, traffic and crime.

If Tri-Delta framed its policies a little more to the centre of the political spectrum perhaps Mayor Jackson and Councilors Hamilton and Campbell would be along for another ride. The citizens of Delta should be happy that the three have broken away from a political entity that has failed to evolve in rapidly changing times. This would indicate that these politicians have taken an issue based approach to Municipal governance which is a postive , appropriate and long overdue way of thinking.

The fact that Tri-Delta has not been able to adapt simply shows how naïve and selfish the group truly is. With 50 % of the vote coming from the North why would Jackson Campbell and Hamilton hang their political futures in the galley of a sinking ship that seems completely unable to pragmatically address issues that could affect positive outcomes for our community as a whole.

There is a suggestion that newly forged Delta Now may be an incarnation of Tri-Delta. If this is to be the case, I can only hope that the candidates and the organization position themselves further to the right and allow their candidates to make independent decisions based on a more practical understanding of when to get in to a fight and when not to.

The movement of Mayor Jackson and councilors Hamilton and Campbell to the political right is attractive to many people in this community. The Tri-Delta types who think that they can puppeteer savvy politicians seem surprisigly unaware that there is a large population in Delta (North and South) that want their elected officials to make decisions based on understanding, fact finding and advice from staff. They are not interested in reading queue cards held up in council chambers from three or four self appointed saviours who believe that they, and only they, can adequately steer Delta down the road.

I am happy that Tri-Delta is essentially done. Time for something new. Who knows, maybe the Provincial Government will be willing to work with us on a few issues?

What a concept! "

Could you elaborate guest? What exactly should Deltans remember and what should they do about it. Who should they vote for and why. You tell me. Be clear though....I want to make an informed choice.

Someof the current council did not listen to the people who voted them in last election. Delta should remember this for this election.

Hi. i took a look in the paper at the names for council. here is my prediction. Mayor Jackson, campbell hamilton macdonald hawksworth king laird. thoughts

I think that Mike makes some pretty good observations. I read some of the replies in the paper and there were some beauties in the optimist today as well. (october 10). The thing of it is that not everyone in delta thinks the same way as tridelta or Al Warner or Lymme kemp or any of the other way too loud people around here. Krista Engelland will be slaughtered in her bid for Mayor which will prove once and for all that people want change.

I was just looking on the Delta Website and as of 4pm it looks like our school board and council will be acclaimed. Unless there was a run today that has not been published on their site that is.

Three way race for Mayor thus far. Giiddy Up!

Here is another example of fear and loathing political schlock in the Surrey Leader

"Environmental collapse"...politicians "abandoning" Deltans? "Increased Cancer rates".

Come on Steve.

Why is it that Krista Engelland voted against the Toigo development and made several references to why this needed housing should not have the opportunity to come to fruition. Could it be that Tri-Delta told her to explicitly say NO to the development? Despite the fact that the clear majority of speakers were in favour of the proposal, Engelland towed the lameo party line and looks foolish now.

Is that why she suddenly seems to be an advocate of new forms of housing?

Can someone help me here?

Maybe she realizes that she was hoodwinked and now knows that her Municipal political carreer is in danger.

Who is the saviour and what will she do do to try to save some face all across the political spectrum?

Politicians or task masters?

A little of both I suppose. I like politicians who can adapt and I think it ridiculous that they should be scorned for not towing an antiquated party line

This Tri-Delta bash was published in the Surrey Leader

Roger Emsley has replied to my community comment. I gather he didn’t like it. That’s OK. I like the publicity anyway. If my frustration comes across as “vindictive” then so be it. I do take comfort in the fact that I am not the only one who is feeling this frustration.

I think Roger is a diligent and articulate man and I wouldn’t stoop to mention his name in the local newspaper or to suggest that he tends to be a blowhard because that would be rude. Instead I will do that here on my own Blog.

Just one note on his soliloquy in the Sept 20 Delta Optimist. Roger seems to think everyone in South Delta is on the same page as him and Tri-Delta. Clearly this not the case and the sad fact that Roger doesn’t recognize this only serves to confirm that he is caught up in the “lefty Motherhood ALR” protectionist mode that has caused the clear and quick destruction of his party.

As Captain of the sinking ship I suppose it is appropriate for him to take the fall, at least publicly, while other overly vocal remnants of his crew hide in the mid ships stewing on their next move. What Riparian habitat is in danger today? What hedgerow can become the last bastion for the protection of the world, as we know it?

The Toigo deal was clearly the last straw for the party that has based its cornerstone philosophy on the word “NO”.

“NO” as initial bargaining position won’t get you very far at all in this day and age and those who do not recognize this are simply doomed.

The Toigo Golf Club development public hearings saw many dozens of citizens in Delta speak to their support of the proposal. It also saw the Agricultural Land Commission review the deal and vote for exclusion.

Let me say that again. The ALC voted for exclusion of some of the lands in question from the ALR. That is why there is an ALC. It is not some hair brained ad hoc group, as many Tri-Deltans would want you to believe. Their work is fair and accurate and needed when opportunities to review best uses of land present themselves.

Not only were their dozens more in the community that were for the Toigo development than there were against it, the majority of our elected representatives listened to the public and voted in favour of moving the process ahead. This would seem to refute Rogers’s assertion that I have “insulted” 50,000 people in South Delta. Rather, I think that my comment reference would indicate that council has spoke for them. What a great idea? Wow!!.... Democracy in action!!

I hear people in South Delta speak of the lack of Democracy in our community…..(Tri-Deltans?)

The Toigo process was a fine example of what democracy really is and the fact that our Mayor and two other former Tri-Delta councilors voted in favour of the process shows that they were open minded in their assessment of what the community really wanted.

What is the matter with that? Nothing is the answer Roger, absolutely nothing.

Issue based governance is the best outcome and I am sorry that your party fails to have the flexibility to at least consider it. Rather than salivate and attempt to sharpen your party’s once sharp fangs, you should consider the idea of working with people rather than constantly butting heads with the holier than though attitude that emanates from the typical yappers from your group. I mean, I like birds and whales and stuff but I like people more. Your party?...not so much.

What about our human ecosystem people? What about our habitat? You haven’t thought this through appropriately and until you do people who are sick of listening to schlock and awe will move ahead and attempt to make best efforts to evolve in a complex and rapidly changing world. Saying no is simply not good enough anymore.

Adapt and move on or die on the vine in typical prune like fashion.

I thought I just highlight this earlier observation

Councillor Engelland suggests that there is a Housing "crisis" in Delta. I whole heartedly agree that Delta and South Delta in particular, does not have enough housing options to address what is needed to keep our community vibrant and self sustaining in the long term. You can read about the issue in the September 22 Delta Optimist

I believe Roger Emsley suggested in the media that Tri-Delta would not be running any candidates this election. Roger is the President of Tri-Delta.

That does not mean that Kritsta will not run. In fact, rumour has it that she will have a go at Mayor Jackson.

Don't you think they will run Krista Engelland?
