Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.....
Well it is officially a wrap. What, if anything can be said about the 2011 Delta Municipal election?
As in many municipalities across the province, a “slate” of candidates has shown yet again, that power shared can be power gained.
The trait for “independence” of late has only led to loose associations and endorsements that are confusing to voters. These same voters have little time or are simply not interested in hearing everyone’s life story. Voters are not as able to connect the dots as the independent campaign crews might think they can.
Independents don’t fit in by virtue of their independence. They are more apt to rally against organization because they are either unwilling or unable to commit to a group dynamic for policy direction.
They see themselves as disruptive change makers and are usually underdogs in key policy making decisions.
It would seem that ”Independence “ is a good idea but not altogether practical in getting things done.
In municipal politics, a successful slate usually means consensus in council chambers. This can be good or bad but at least the public knows what to expect for the most part.
In the instance of the mayoral race this go around, it was pretty clear that Lois Jackson was a formidable incumbent and was not going anywhere. Mid race polling indicated it was game over early.
Mayor Jackson will long be remembered for her longevity if nothing else.
This election she was challenged by three. Neither one came close and all three were independents.
If Engelland or King tried to build a slate with the council candidates from the get go perhaps they would have faired better.
